Tourists pack the famous Plaza de la Riena in Valencia

Mass tourism in Spain...how can you enjoy your next trip

Crowds of TickTockers, apartments owners kicking out locals from apartments they’ve lived in most of their lives, historic sites packed with selfie taking tourists, overcrowded airport and train stations... travel is going through major changes everywhere.

Cities in Spain and elsewhere are grappling with the problem, while tourism is a major source of income, providing thousands of jobs and generating a steady flow of tax income it’s clearly causing a serious problems. Action has been taken in some cities by restricting the number of rentals available in popular locations like historic city centres, but this can drive up hotel rates as demand for accommodation rises. There are more restrictions on ticket sales some major sites while chargers have increased at others.

Some options to make travel more enjoyable

Many neighborhoods close to the action are quiet and uncrowded.

For people who prefer to make their own travel arrangements, staying in quiet neighborhoods and mixing with the locals much of the overcrowding in popular city centres can be avoided, at least part of the time. If you’re willing to do some research there are often rentals and small local hotels in neighborhoods, many within walking distance of city centres and tourist attractions. However, keep in mind these neighborhoods don’t cater to tourists like they do in popular destinations. Here you’ll find some Spanish will help, most are happy to see you and your money but you don't always expect the checkout person at the market or the staff in a cafe to always speak English.
